MC Theatre’s “Birds” Review

Meredith College’s Theatre department has wrapped up it’s productions of “Birds,” written by Aristophanes and translated by Nathalie Ray. The production took place in the courtyard of Meredith’s Rolfe Science and Math Building beginning Wednesday, Sept. 30, and concluding on Sunday, Oct. 4. The program featuredleads Nori Rivera as Pisthetarios, Mika Williams as Eulipedes and Gabrielle Spehar as Tereus.
Nori Rivera, ‘27, is studying Creative Writing and Theatre. Gabrielle Spehar, ‘27, is also studying Creative Writing and Theatre. Mika Williams, ‘30, is studying Theatre, and “Birds” will be her first show as a Meredith student.
“‘Birds’ follows Pisthetarios and Eulipedes, two Athenians who are unhappy with their current lives, as they decide to leave Athens,” summarizes Payton Glandorf, ‘29, lighting designer for the production. “Through a series of comedic events, they join forces with the birds and create a kingdom in the sky to overthrow the gods.”
Dozens of students, faculty and alumnae spent weeks working together to create “Birds.” “I loved watching this show come together with an amazing cast and crew,” said Claire Hutchens, ‘29, wardrobe assistant and dresser for “Birds.” “It’s so fun to be a part of bringing it to life.”
“Birds” is naturally entertaining, engaging and interactive for any audience member. The actors did a great job in not only capturing the audience’s attention, but maintaining that engagement throughout the course of the play. With a clear plot, comedic improvisation and interactive segments, every production is sure to be remembered.
“I thoroughly enjoyed Meredith College Theatre’s performance of ‘Birds,’” said Ainsley Hodge, ‘28, who attended Thursday night’s showing. “The actors’ interactions with the audience enhanced my experience greatly, but the comedic aspects of ‘Birds’ drew me in most. I found myself laughing throughout the entire play.”
While “Birds” has officially closed, students have plenty of opportunities to experience Meredith College Theatre’s productions on campus this semester. “The Moors,” written by Jen Silverman and directed by Flora Bare, will be opening on Wednesday, Nov. 11 in Jones Hall’s Studio Theatre.
