At the Student Senate meeting on Sep. 11, Meredith College’s chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine filed to change their organization's name to Meredith Global Justice Collective. Founded last academic year, this organization has hosted and participated in a variety of events, such as demonstrations and fundraisers for relief in the Gaza Strip. A part of their mission is to keep Meredith College students informed by sharing informational posts regarding humanitarian crises on their Instagram page, @merecosjp. On this account, they label themselves as “Meredith College’s only anti-imperialist collective.” As suggested by their description, the organization has always had a broader focus than Palestine, especially when it comes to their social media presence, which prompted their desire for a new name..
The group’s social media manager, Molly Auxter, commented: “The name change shows others that were not zooming in on one issue. It’s important to have a name that reflects our values of giving voice to all oppressed people of the world. Also the current global issues we're seeing in the news are intertwined.”
Per their Instagram page, the organization held its first meeting of the year on Wednesday, September 17.
