Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Avenging Angels Win Multiple Games Over Weekend

March 23: Lacrosse game against Averett University


The lacrosse team won their game against Averett University with a score of 22-8. Madeline Horrell and Mackenzie Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Kylie Phillips scored six goals and had eight total shots. Arrianna May scored four goals, two assists and had six total shots. Freshman Olivia Verlinden scored four goals, one assist and four total shots. Senior Maya Flake scored three goals, one assist and four total shots. Tori Witmer scored two goals and had three total shots. Freshman Lauryn Turner scored one goal, had three assists and one total shot. Jessica Dowdy scored one goal, had one assist and six total shots. Freshman Ava Spradley scored one goal and had two total shots.


March 25: Tennis match against Greensboro College


The tennis team won their match against Greensboro College with a final score of 6-0.


March 25: Track and field at Adidas Trojan Challenge


The Meredith track and field teams placed 7th overall at the Adidas Trojan Challenges. The first day of the Adidas Trojan Challenge, the Meredith track and field teams competed in the javelin, high jump and hammer. Senior Tylena Brown competed in the javelin and hammer throw. She finished with distances of 23.63 meters and 27.11 meters, finishing 7th in the javelin throw. Abby Black competed in the javelin and hammer throw and finished with distances of 16.37 meters and 19.04 meters. Danika Ray competed in the javelin and hammer and finished with distances of 17.99 meters and 22.06 meters. Stem Martin competed in the javelin and finished with a throw of 14.91 meters. Shaniya Taylor competed in the javelin and finished with a throw of 15.46 meters. Sophie Phillips competed in the high jump and got a height of 1.40 meters, finishing 7th.


March 26: Track and field at Adidas Trojan Challenge


The Meredith track and field team continued to perform on the second day of the Adidas Trojan Challenge. Corrine Weaver ran the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 800-meter run and finished with times of 11:27.36 and 2:26.79. Weaver won the 3,000 steeplechase and finished 6th in the 800. Julie Tonon ran the 5,000-meter run and finished 4th with a time of 18:48.97. Andrea Gallegos ran the 5,000 and finished 9th with a time of 20:55.90. Senior Shaniya Taylor, freshman Shelby Frye, freshman Taylor O’Neal and Grace Olufemi-Ajayi ran the 4x100 meter relay and finished with a time of 52.42, placing in 6th.


Isabella Saudo ran the 5,000 and finished with a time of 21:13.44. Freshman Barresha Jones competed in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes and finished with times of 14.59 and 30.82. De’ja Morgan ran the 100 and the 200 and finished with times of 15.10 and 31.85. Olufemi-Ajayi ran the 100 and the 200 and finished with times of 13.43 and 28.47. Taylor ran the 200 and finished with a time of 30.94.


Michelle Gladdis ran the 1,500-meter run and the 800 and finished with times of 5:37.46 and 2:55.86. Claire Miller ran the 1,500 and the 800 and finished with times of 6:10.91 and 3:00.25. Mia Russell ran the 1,500 and the 800 and finished with times of 6:22.55 and 3:07.44. Freshman Keerthi Tammineni ran the 800 and finished with a time of 3:34.26.


Adriana Melton ran the 200 and jumped the long jump. She finished with a time and distance of 31.28 and 3.91 meters. Frye ran the 400-meter dash and jumped in the long jump. She finished with a time and distance of 1:08.33 and 4.29 meters. Martin ran the 400 and finished with a time of 1:14.95. O’Neal ran the 400 and finished with a time of 1:04.34.


Brown competed in the shot put and discus, finishing with distances of 8.13 meters and 19.73 meters. Black competed in the shot put and discus, finishing with distances of 6.78 meters and 16.92 meters. Ray competed in the shot put and discus and finished with distances of 7.82 meters and 24.75 meters.


Track and field’s next meet is scheduled for April 1-2 at the Battleground Relays at Mary Washington University.


March 26: Lacrosse game against Lynchburg College


The lacrosse team won their game against Lynchburg with a final score of 10-4. Bianchi was the goalie for this game. Dowdy scored four goals, had one assist and five total shots. Phillips scored two goals and six total shots. Verlinden and freshman Kayleigh Murphy scored one goal, one assist and three shots total. May scored one goal and had two total shots. Witmer scored one goal and had one total shot. Flake had one assist and had four shots. Turner had two total shots.


March 26: Lacrosse game against Pfeiffer University


Meredith won their game against Pfieffer with a final score of 19-6. Horrell was the goalie for this game. Phillips scored six goals, had one assist and six total shots. Flake scored two goals, two assists and two total shots. Spradley and freshman Sophie Hutton scored two goals and six total shots. May scored two goals and four total shots. Witmer scored one goal, three assists and three total shots. Turner scored one goal, one assist and two total shots. Freshman Sophie LeClaire scored one goal and three total shots. Murphy and Verlinden scored one goal and two total shots. Dowdy had two assists and four total shots. Lacrosse’s next game is set for March 30 against NC Wesleyan College at Meredith.


March 26: Softball doubleheader game against Salem College


The Meredith softball team won the first game of their doubleheader against the Salem College Spirits on Saturday with a final score of 11-3. Senior Sarah Gundlach started on the mound and threw 79 strikes out of a total of 104 pitches. Susanne Taylor and freshman Jessie Woller each had three hits and two runs batted in (RBI). One of Taylor’s two hits was a home run. Fallon Wimberly had two hits, including a home run, and four RBIs. Sarah Manis also had two hits and two RBIs. Alyssa Drake also had two hits. Madison Hamilton, senior Anna Goldman and Savannah Talley all had one hit each.


The softball team also won the second game of their double header against Salem College with a final score of 9-2. Drake led the team in hits with four, including one homerun and two RBIs. Woller had two hits and one RBI. Hamilton also had two hits. Goldman had one hit, which was a homerun and two RBIs. Wimberly also had one hit and two RBIs. Mia Staggs and freshman Rheanne Burden also had one hit each. Danielle Hunt started at pitcher and threw 32 strikes out of a total of 62 pitches, she also had two strikeouts. Gundlach pitched the last three innings of the game and recorded 17 strikes out of a total of 25 pitches and had one strikeout.


March 27: Tennis match against Mary Baldwin University


The Meredith tennis team won their match against Mary Baldwin with a final score of 8-1.
