Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Final Week of Games for Avenging Angels

April 20: Track and field at the USA South Outdoor Track & Field Championships


The Meredith College track and field teams placed 5th overall in the team score at the USA South Outdoor Championship. A total of five school records were broken during this meet.


Corrine Weaver was named Track Athlete of the Meet. She finished 1st in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:31.01, 2nd in the women’s 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.07 and 2nd in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:05.43. Weaver also ran the 400 meter hurdles and finished 4th with a time of 1:13.45.


In the preliminary heat of the 100 meter dash, Grace Olufemi-Ajayi finished with a time of 13.43, Barresha Jones with a time of 14.21, Adriana Melton with a time of 14.61 and De’Ja Morgan with a time of 14.95.


In the preliminary heat of the 200 meter dash, Taylor O’Neal finished with a time of 29.13, Shelby Frye with a time of 28.63, Stem Martin with a time of 31.40, Olufemi-Ajayi with a time of 27.95, Jones with a time of 29.32, Melton with a time of 30.59, Morgan with a time of 31.57 and senior Shaniya Taylor with a time of 33.98.


In the preliminary heat of the 400, Frye finished with a time of 1:03.25 and Martin with a time of 1:11.65. In the 400 final, O’Neal placed 6th with a time of 1:04.62. In the 800 final, Andrea Gallegos finished with a time of 2:39.53, Michelle Gladdis with a time of 2:47.93, Claire Miller with a time of 2:49.33 and Keerthi Tammineni with a time of 3:35.06.


In the 1,500 final, Gladdis placed 9th with a time of 5:30.40, Gallegos finished with a time of 5:35.02, Miller with a time of 6:05.31 and Tammineni with a time of 7:23.37.


In the 5,000 meter run final, Julie Tonon placed 4th with a time of 19:30.29 and Isabella Saudo finished with a time of 21:39.70. In the 10,000 meter run final, Tonon placed 4th with a time of 42:47.11.


In the 4x100 relay, O’Neal, Taylor, Frye and Olufemi-Ajayi finished 5th with a time of 53.26. In the 4x400 relay, Frye, Gallegos, O’Neal and Weaver finished 4th with a time of 4:18.29.


In the high jump, Sophie Phillips finished 5th with a distance of 1.45 meters. In the long jump, Frye finished with a distance of 4.26 meters and Melton finished with a distance of 3.70 meters.


In the javelin throw, senior Tylena Brown placed 9th with a distance of 26.05 meters, Taylor finished with a distance of 22.60 meters, Martin with a distance of 20.75 meters, Danika Ray with a distance of 17.50 meters and Abby Black with a distance of 15.05 meters.


In the discus throw, Ray placed 9th with a distance of 29.26 meters, Brown finished with a distance of 24.04 meters and Black with a distance of 17.50 meters.


In the shot put, Brown placed 8th with a distance of 10.02 meters, Ray finished with a distance of 8.50 meters and Black with a distance of 7.40 meters.


In the hammer throw, Brown placed 9th with a distance of 33.62 meters, Black finished with a distance of 25.02 meters and Ray with a distance of 21.06 meters.


April 20: Softball doubleheader against Averett University


The softball team won their first game in the doubleheader against Averett University with a final score of 6-5. Senior Sarah Gundlach and freshman Alexa Daniel were the pitchers for this game. Alyssa Drake and Sarah Manis bat five times and scored two runs. Madison Hamilton bat five times and scored one run. Fallon Wimberly was at bat five times. Savannah Talley, Laura Tobin and freshman Jessie Woller bat four times. Susanne Taylor bat three times and scored one run. Senior Anna Goldman bat twice.


The Avenging Angels lost their second game against Averett University with a final score of 4-6. Daniel and Gundlach were the pitchers for this game. Drake, Manis and Goldman bat four times and scored one run each. Wimberly, Woller and Hamilton bat four times. Talley and Kendall Johnson bat three times each. Tobin bat twice. Mia Staggs scored one run.


April 20: Lacrosse game against Christopher Newport University


The lacrosse team lost their game against Christopher Newport University with a final score of 6-19. Madeline Horrell and Mackenzie Bianchi were the goalies for this game. Jessica Dowdy and freshman Olivia Verlinden scored two goals and had two total shots. Arrianna May scored one goal and had three total shots. Freshman Kayleigh Murphy scored one goal and had two total shots. Kylie Phillips and senior Maya Flake each had one assist.


April 23: Softball doubleheader against Greensboro College


The softball team lost their first game against Greensboro College with a final score of 0-2. Gundlach was the pitcher for this game. Manis, Woller, Goldman, Drake and Talley bat three times. Wimberly, Hamilton, Tobin and Taylor bat two times each.


The softball team lost their second game with a final score of 1-8. Daniel, Gundlach and Hannah Weigle all were pitchers in this game. Manis batted three times and scored one run. Staggs, Goldman, Wimberly and Talley bat three times. Drake, Woller, Johnson and Tobin bat two times. Senior Emily Velazquez and freshman Gracie Massengale bat once.


April 23: Lacrosse game against Piedmont College


The lacrosse team crushed Piedmont College with a final score of 23-8. Bianchi and Horrell were the goalies for this game. May scored seven goals, one assist and nine total shots. Tori Witmer scored three goals, one assist and four total shots. Verlinden and senior Olivia Blake scored three goals and seven total shots. Dowdy scored two goals, two assists and six total shots. Phillips scored two goals and seven total shots. Flake scored one goal, six assists and one total shot. Murphy scored one goal and three total shots. Freshman Ava Spradley scored one goal and two total shots.


April 24: Tennis match against Pfeiffer University


The tennis team lost in the first round of the USA South Tournament with a final score of 0-5.


April 24: Softball doubleheader against Christopher Newport University


The softball team lost both games of their doubleheader against Christopher Newport University on Sunday. The first game they lost with a score of 0-6. Staggs had one hit, and Hamilton had one double. Gundlach was the starting pitcher in this game and struck out seven batters on her Senior Day game.


The final score of the second game was 1-9. Goldman had two hits, including an RBI single. Outfielder Manis also had two hits. Drake, Hamilton and freshman Victoria Negron all had one hit each. Pitcher Danielle Hunt pitched four innings and two strikeouts. Brie Caldwell pitched the last three innings and struck out three batters.
