Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: Indoor Track & Field Championship; Lacrosse Begins Season

Feb. 28: Track and field at NCAA Division III Atlantic Indoor Championships


The Meredith track and field team placed 7th out of 9th at the NCAA Division III Atlantic Indoor Championships. Grace Olufemi-Ajayi ran the 100-meter and 200-meter dash with finishing times of 8.45 and 28.60 seconds. Senior Shaniya Taylor also ran the 100 and the 200 with finishing times of 9.01 seconds and 30.41 seconds. Taylor O’Neal raced in the 200 and the 400-meter dash and finished with times of 28.78 seconds and 1:04.89 minutes.


Shelby Frye ran the 200 and the 400 and did the long jump; she finished with a time of 29.69 in the 200, 1:08.92 in the 400 and 4.01 meters in the long jump. Adriana Melton ran the 200 and did the long jump; she ran 31.29 in the 200 and 3.58 meters in the long jump. Jazmin Reyes ran the 400 and jumped in the long jump with finishes of 1:13.17 in the 400 and 3.66 meters in the long jump. Stem Martin ran in the 400 with a time of 1:18.83.


Andrea Gallegos ran the 800-meter run and the mile run and finished with times of 2:39.07 and 5:50.54. Ashleigh Buser ran the 800 and the mile and finished with times of 2:43.41 and 5:49.67. Michelle Gladdis ran the 800 and finished with a time of 2:44.61. Claire Miller ran the 800 and finished with a time of 2:56.76.


Corrine Weaver ran the mile and the 3,000-meter run and finished with times of 5:18.30 and 10:51.08. Julie Tonon ran the mile and the 3,000 with times of 5:33.30 and 11:13.40. Isabella Saudo ran the 3,000 and finished with a time of 12:39.13.


Sophie Phillips jumped in the high jump with a highest jump of 1.37. Senior Tylena Brown threw in the shot put and weight throw with finishing lengths of 8.83 meters and 10.79 meters. Abby Black competed in the shot put and weight throw and finished with 7.64 meters in the shot put and 6.94 meters in the weight throw. Danika Ray threw in the shot put and finished at the 7.36 meter mark.


Frye, Gallegos, Weaver and O’Neal competed in the 4x400-meter relay and finished 5th with a time of 4.29.77. Gladdis, Martin, Miller and Saudo competed in the distance medley and finished in 5th with a time of 14.50.93.


Mar. 2: Lacrosse game against Virginia Wesleyan University


The lacrosse team started its season off with a dominant 20-9 win over Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday. Jessica Dowdy led the team in goals with five goals on seven shots; Dowdy also recorded two assists. Freshman Lauryn Turner added four goals on seven shots in her collegiate debut. Tori Witmer, Kylie Phillips, Olivia Verlinden, Maya Flake and Arrianna May all scored two goals. May also had two assists, Phillips had one assist and Flake had one assist. Mackenzie Bianchi started at goalie and recorded three saves on seven shot attempts in the first half. Goalie Madeline Horrell started at goalie in the second half and recorded two saves on seven shot attempts.


Mar. 5: Track and field at the Seahawk Invitational


The track and field teams started their outdoor season with a bang. Olufemi-Ajayi ran the 100 and the 200 and finished with times of 13.41 and 28.54. Sara-Hale Watson ran the 100 and the 200 and finished with times of 15.31 and 33.27. Freshman Barresha Jones ran the 100 and the 200 and finished with times of 14.67 and 30.10. O’Neal ran the 200 and the 400 and finished with times of 28.79 and 1:03.67. Shaniya Taylor ran the 200and finished with a time of 30.45. Melton jumped in the long jump and ran the 200, finishing with a 3.80 meter jump and a running time of 30.87.


Shelby Frye ran the 400 and finished with a time of 1:05.86. Martin ran the 400 and finished with a time of 1:13.65. Gallegos ran the 800 and finished with a time of 2:32.30.


Gladdis ran the 800 and finished with a time of 2:43.70. Mia Russell ran the 400-meter hurdles and the 800 and finished with times of 1:39.99 and 3:06.22.


Saudo ran the 1,500-meter run and finished with a time of 5:45.91. Corrine Weaver ran the 5,000-meter run and finished with a time of 18:43.01. Julie Tonon ran the 5,000 and finished with a time of 19:08.91.


Phillips jumped in the high jump. Reyes jumped in the long jump with a distance of 3.64m.


Brown competed in the shot put, hammer throw, discus and javelin. She finished with a 10.10m in shot, 25.87 meters in hammer, 23.21 meters in discus and 20.72 meters in javelin. Ray competed in the shot put, hammer throw, discus and javelin. She finished with a 8.99 meters in shot put, 20.52 meters in hammer, 23.53 meters in discus and 18.24 meters in javelin.


The track team will be back at UNC-Wilmington next week for their invitational on March 12.


Mar. 5: Lacrosse game against Mary Washington University


Over the weekend, the Meredith lacrosse team fell to Mary Washington University with a final score of 6-16. Turner led the team with two goals on two shots. Phillips scored one goal on three shots. Flake scored one goal on two shots. May made one goal on four shots. Dowdy also had one goal on four shots. Mackenzie Bianchi totaled two saves and goalie Horrell totaled three saves.


The Avenging Angels look to bounce back in their next game against William Peace University on March 9.
