Meredith College’s Theatre department recently wrapped on “The Revolutionists,” for their 2024-2025 season performances. The play was written by Laura Gunderson and directed by guest artist Barbette Hunter. Laura Gunderson is a playwright who is known for plays like “Natural Shock,” according to her bio.
The play ran from Sep. 25 to Sep. 28 in the Studio Theatre under Jones Auditorium. The Black Box theatre in Jones holds classes as well as productions. The purpose of this type of theatre is to allow for audiences to be closer to the performers, be more immersed in the plot of the play and feel the emotions of the actors in close proximity, according to StageRight. Students are able to look at the program of “The Revolutionists” here.
“The Revolutionists,” according to the program, follows four women and their journeys to gain freedom and break stereotypes during the French Revolution. This play is a drama and comedy that contains jokes as well as intense dialogue about war, love, death, fear, and hope. These women have goals to have freedom, to be heard, and to write down their stories. All of these women just want to be seen and heard no matter what happens to them, even if that means death. The play’s program describes these women as historical figures of the French Revolution and notes how the “script sheds light on their oft-ignored stories and impacts in a time of rampant political change.” In addition, the program also looks at the ways to “explore and redefine the tragically misconstrued legacies of these four women in the grand scheme of history.”
All of the actors are students of Meredith College, many of whom are freshman this semester. These students play integral roles in the play, with Alana Barber playing Marianne for example. According to the program, cast members also feature seniors, such as Autumn Clark, who played Marie Antoinette. Clark’s biography also mentions other performances of hers, including “Tartuffe,” “Sweet Charity” and ETC’s “Miscast Cabaret.”
Later this semester, Meredith College is going to be performing a musical called “Committed: The Musical”. This musical will be playing from Nov. 8 through Nov. 16. The program also highlighted the “Meredith Jazz & Tap Company and Meredith Dance Theatre in Concert” which will be hosted in Jones auditorium from Nov. 22 until Nov. 24.
