James Patterson and Mike Lupica Talk New Book in Jones Chapel

James Patterson–the mystery and thriller author who has sold over 425 million books–visited Meredith College and he was hosted in Jones Chapel on Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in a ticketed event. He was joined by Mike Lupica, another writer and co-author of his newest book, “12 Months to Live.”

The Herald was in attendance to listen and watch as the chapel filled with smiles and laughs at all the jokes and stories Patterson and Lupica told about how they met, how they began working together and what life has been like for the two of them since they became friends. The pair discussed the promotion of their new book and that it is the first of what will be a three-part series.

The main character was described as a brilliant and feisty woman working as a criminal defense attorney. In the novel she is deep into a murder trial when she gets diagnosed with a terminal illness that gives her only 12 months to live. However, while fighting to live and get the most out of her 12 months, she is murdered.

Patterson and Lupica conversed about how this is their favorite and most “bad-ass” character they’ve created as well as how excited they are to watch her character unfold more in their next two books.

The event ended with a passing around of the microphone for participants to ask questions about the book, share stories of what their favorite books have been so far and for aspiring writers in the audience to ask for advice on how to perfect their craft.

After the discussion portion, there was meant to be a book signing. However, it was canceled by the event coordinators due to unforeseen circumstances. However, attendees were still able to get a pre-signed copy of the new book at the end of the event.

Patterson and Lupica captivated the audience with both their presence and their newest book. The event provided an opportunity for engagement and learning between audience and authors.
