Weekly Sports Wrap-Up: April 4-10

April 6: Golf match at Wildwood Green Golf Club against Methodist University


The Meredith golf team took the course against Methodist University and lost. Meredith’s total points were 466 and +186 par. Leah Campbell came in seventh place with a total of 99 and +29 par. Freshman Jenna Cirillo came in eighth place with a total of 106 and +36 par. Senior Allyson Nowell came in ninth place with a total of 111 and +41 par. Senior Kimberly Schuh came in eleventh with a total of 150 and +80 par. The next scheduled match is April 13, 2021, versus Pfeiffer University at Old North State Club.


April 7: Tennis match at home against Methodist University


Meredith’s tennis team took the court against Methodist University and lost with a final score of 9-0. No players won the singles or doubles matchups.


April 7: Lacrosse game at home against NC Wesleyan College


The Avenging Angels took the field against the Bishops and won with a final score of 25-6. Freshman Madeline Horrell was the goalie for 50 minutes during this game and senior Joy Deitrich was the goalie for the rest of the time in the game. Senior Lilia Cruz scored five goals, had one assist, seven total shots, two ground balls and eight draw controls. Olivia Blake scored four goals, had two assists, eight total shots and one ground ball. Tori Witmer scored four goals, had two assists, four total shots and one ground ball. Maya Flake scored three goals, had six assists, three total shots and two ground balls. Kylie Phillips scored two goals, one assist, three total shots, two ground balls and one draw control. Freshman Jessica Dowdy scored two goals, had one assist, three total shots and 11 draw controls. Kamryn Muschette, ‘24, Faith Gray, Ali Schuh and Meredith Sinkler all scored one goal each.


April 8: Tennis match at home against Pfeiffer University


Meredith’s tennis team took the court against Pfeiffer University at home and lost with a final score of 8-1. Senior Rachel Scott Dunn and freshman Savannah Duduk won a doubles game against Charlotte Craven and Ruth Fallen from Pfeiffer with a final score of 8-6. The next match for the tennis team is April 11, 2021, at Mary Baldwin University at 3:30 p.m..


April 10: Track and Field at Trojan Relays at the University of Mount Olive


Meredith’s track and field team traveled to the University of Mount Olive to compete in the Trojan Relays, and the team finished in eighth place. Senior Kim Schuh participated in the women’s shot put and finished with a distance of 9.67m. Sara-Hale Watson ran the 100 and 200m dash and finished with times of 15.13 and 31.82. Grace Olufemi-Ajayi participated in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, and her finished times were 13.56 and 28.67. Grace also participated in the 4x100 meter relay with Erin Outlaw, Jala Pollock and Ansley Bucknam; they finished with a time of 54.92, which was good enough to land them fifth place. Jala Pollock participated in the shot put, 100 and 200 meter dash. Her finished times and distances were 6.29m in the shot put, 14.72 in the 100 and 30.82 in the 200 meter dash. Madison Massey, ‘24, ran the 400 meter dash and finished with a time of 1:24.26. Abby Black participated in the shot put and finished with a distance of 6.44m. Ansley Bucknam ran the 400 meter dash, 400 meter hurdles, 200 meter dash and participated in the long jump and shot put. Her finishing times and distances were 1:04.71 in the 400m dash, 1:12.59 in the 400m hurdles, 29.74 in the 200m dash, 4.13m in the long jump and 6.59m in the shot put. Erin Outlaw ran the 400 and 200 meter dash and finished with times of 1:05.00 and 28.72. Outlaw and Bucknam also participated in the 4x400m dash with Andrea Gallegos, ‘24, and Corrine Weaver and finished with a time of 4:25.81, which landed them fourth place. Also running the 4x400m dash was Claire Miller, ‘24, Kaelin Sanderford, Kaylee Spencer and Ashleigh Buser, who finished with a time of 4:49.46. Weaver ran the 1500m and 800m race and finished with times of 4:56.93 and 2:25.67, which landed her in fifth and fourth place, respectively. Gallegos ran the 800m race and finished in sixth place with a time of 2:28.23. Miller ran the 1500m and 800m races and finished with times of 5:59.76 and 2:49.63. Sanderford also ran the 1500m and 800m races and finished with times of 5:35.44 and 2:40.44. Spencer ran the 1500m and 800m races and finished with times of 5:29.67 and 2:44.57. Buser ran the 1500m race and finished with a time of 5:28.90. Emma Brooks, ‘24, ran the 1500m race and finished with a time of 6:06.20. Michelle Gladdis ran the 1500m race and finished with a time of 6:37.09. Francie Overman ran the 800m race and finished with a time of 2:42.30. Mitxi Ortiz ran the 800m race and finished with a time of 3:04.26. Julie Tonon ran the 5000m race and finished with a personal best of 19:47.66, which led her to fourth place. Isabella Saudo ran the 5000m race and also finished with a personal best of 21:48.63. The track and field teams next race is the USA South Championship in Berea, Kentucky at Berea College from April 28-29, 2021.


April 10: Softball game at home against Pfeiffer University


The Meredith softball team took the field in a double header against Pfeiffer University and lost both games. The final score of the first game was 10-7. Sarah Gundlach, Danielle Hunt and Fallon Wimberly all pitched during the first game. Senior Alyssa Drake was up to bat five times and had one run. Savannah Talley, ‘24, was up to bat four times and had two runs. Sarah Manis, ‘24, Rachel Johnson, ‘21, and Susanne Taylor, ‘21, were up to bat four times each and had one run each. Madison Hamilton, ‘21, and Fallon Wimberly were up to bat four times. Tatum Smith was up to bat three times. Anna Goldman was up to bat twice and had one run. The final score of the second game was 10-3. Sarah Gundlach, Brie Caldwell and Hannah Weigle all pitched during the second game. Tatum Smith batted four times during the game. Madison Hamilton, Fallon Wimberly and Sarah Manis were all up to bat three times and had one run each. Alyssa Drake, Rachel Johnson, Savannah Talley and Susanne Taylor were all up to bat three times each. Anna Goldman was up to bat twice. Freshman Laura Tobin was up to bat once during the second game.


April 10: Lacrosse game at Averett University


The Meredith lacrosse team took the field against Averett University and won with a final school of 20-5. Senior Joy Deitrich and freshman Madeline Horrell both played 30 minutes each as goalie. Kylie Phillips scored seven goals, two assists and eight total shots. Senior Lilia Cruz scored five goals, two assists, ten total shots, four ground balls and five draw controls. Olivia Blake scored three goals, three assists, seven total shots and one ground ball. Maya Flake scored two goals, four assists and two total shots. Tori Witmer scored two goals, one assist, seven total shots and two ground balls. Senior Briana Petrusa scored one goal, had two total shots, three ground balls and one draw control. Freshman Arrianna May had one assist, six total shots, six ground balls and one draw control. Jessica Dowdy had one assist, three total shots, one ground ball and 13 draw controls.
